One Day In December - Josie Silver

When One Day In December dropped through my letterbox it felt like Mumsnet had read my mind. I've been stuck in a bit of a thriller reading rut and needed something light hearted and happy to get out of it. That's not to say that I don't love the heavy going, mind boggling twists that thrillers hold, it's just that with the weather turning I needed something warm and cosy. And this book by Josie Silver ticked all the boxes.

I have to hold my hands up and say that chick-lit is never the first genre that I go for when trying to read a book. When I was in my early teens I read them obsessively and I feel that I've nailed the formula in my head when it comes to what happens. Having said that, I love delving into them once in a while and this one definitely thawed my non romantic heart!

One Day In December is based on a hopeless romantic called Lu. One day in December she locks eyes with the most beautiful man she has ever seen from the window of the bus. But before anything can happen it is whisked away and the moment is lost. After spending a year trying to find Bus Stop Boy she finally meets him. Unfortunately Jack aka Bus Stop Boy has a girlfriend....Lu's best mate.

Pushing her broken heart to the back of her mind, she convinces herself to hide her feelings for the sake of her friendship. But is that really the best thing to do?

Based over the span of ten years; it charts the rise and fall of relationships, heart break and happiness. It's the perfect book to remind you to both follow your heart and be honest to yourself and everyone else. I loved the way that the book covered both Lu and Jack's sides of the story, and without giving too much away it made me wish that I could dive into the book and help each of them!

I loved all the characters to be honest. Lu reminded me so much of myself that it felt really eerie to read at times. Jack was the stereotypical heart-throb that we all need in a rom-com and Sarah was the high flying yet brilliant friend that we all have in our lives (I know I do). Each of them complemented each other perfectly and I honestly couldn't pick my favourite.

As I've mentioned, I'm not a hopeless romantic. But this book honestly gave me the feeling that love is brilliant, magical and can definitely be at first sight. I raced through the book and read it in almost one sitting with a big mug of hot chocolate and a blanket. To say that I was hooked from the first page is an understatement. I felt so invested in this book that I handed it straight to my friend and told her it would be perfect to read.

If you are looking for a perfect winter read that will leave you radiating warmth and love, then this is definitely the book for you. If it can thaw even the most cynical then it's a winner in my books!
