Half Term Family Shows To Not Miss

There are so many amazing things going on this half term (and surrounding dates) at the theatres this year that I was hard pushed to pick some of my favourites. It's easy to get overwhelmed with what's on offer, so I've put together another handy post with all the top shows going on in the Poole/Bournemouth/Southampton areas this February. There is something for all the family to enjoy, from first theatre trips, to workshops and musicals for the older ones.

As always, the Lighthouse in Poole has arranged one of the best and diverse selections for families to enjoy this half term. They have really gone above and beyond this year to provide shows that will captivate audiences and ignite the imagination.

First up is I Believed In Unicorns that is taking place on the 23rd and 24th Feb. Based on the bestselling book by Michael Morpurgo, this show is set in a library full of books that hold more than just stories in their pages. When Tomas meets the Unicorn Lady in the library, he doesn't know what to expect, until he goes on a magical journey. It's suitable for ages 6+ and will really spark a love of literature and get them reading.

For a twist on a classic, Mirror Mirror is a fantastic adaptation of Snow White. Snow has already been poisoned this week, so she really must think hard when she is offered yet another red apple by a kind old lady. Combining puppets and sign language, this show is one that is truly showing how accessible theatre can be for little ones of all ages and abilities. It's on for one day on the 13th February.

Aimed at the teenagers, but suitable for children age 7+ too, Journey To The Impossible is an 80's influenced coming of age quest that is packed with bicycles, bandanas and space travel. With the popularity of shows such as Stranger Things, this show is really going to tick all the boxes for those nostalgic for 80's adventure. Escape with them on the 10th February.

To add a bit of magic to your day, why not try Don't Dribble On The Dragon. With magic designed by the late and great Paul Daniels, this spectacular musical adventure is about a boy who's older brother is hiding a dragon in his sock drawer. Filled with breathtaking magic tricks, this show will definitely leave you stunned and in awe of what's on stage. But be quick, it's only on stage on the 3rd February.

A few years ago, I took Max to see Lyngo Theatre's edition of Puss In Boots. It was one of the most magical shows we had seen, and one we still remember to this day. This year they are back with their rendition of Tom Thumb. Performed entirely on and under a kitchen table, be prepared to be amazed as this takes to stage on the 15th February. It's perfect for little ones and adults alike.

Whilst the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton isn't putting on a dedicated show for families this half term, they have got an amazing host of workshops for children to enjoy, along with a show in early feb to inspire those ballet toes!

On the 14th February, they are hosting their Play In A Day workshop. It's something that I know Max would have absolutely loved if we weren't already busy. From morning until home time, children will learn and create a play to put on for their parents as they learn a wide variety of theatre techniques. It's aimed at children aged 7-11 years old and would be a perfect introduction to theatre.

First Steps is a perfect introduction to ballet for little ones by the Birmingham Royal Ballet. This hour long show is on the 2nd February and takes them through the story of Sleeping Beauty whilst being fully interactive. This would be perfect for any little ones taking their first classes that may be princess mad.

Another Mayflower workshop is the Teddy Bear's Valentine Picnic. On the 16th February, this family workshop will explore your little ones setting up a picnic for their teddies in an interactive hour of drama and fun. This is the perfect introduction to imaginative play for little ones aged 18 months to 6 years.

From the 15th-17th February,  Swish of the Curtain theatre school will be showing their rendition of Footloose at the Bournemouth Pavilion. Whilst this won't be suitable for the younger years, it will certainly hit the spot for the older kids and adults as they jump and jive their way through the classic stage show.

The Nuffield Theatre in Southampton is putting on some amazing family friendly shows this year for everyone to enjoy. Based on the university campus as well as the city, this theatre is really pushing the boat out for innovative and interactive theatre.

On the 24th February the Jack And The Beanstalk Cafe will take you on a wild journey through puppetry and food as you learn about the age old tale. With live music and original songs, this show is definitely a unique one to capture the imagination.

From the 12-17th February, the classic Guess How Much I Love You takes to the stage. This adaptation is perfect for fans of the book, no matter the age as you join little and big Nutbrown Hare on their adventures.
