August Reads: Alex, Approximately

August literally flew by. With summer holidays and going freelance, I'm surprised that I managed to read 5 books (and no, they weren't all kids books!). I read a great mix of YA, middle grade and thrillers and I really enjoyed all of them. I even managed to get halfway through another that I finished in the early hours of September.

Now I've quit Waterstones, I can see my reading levels decrease. Partly to keep hold of some of them (so I don't have to buy more) and also because my job doesn't rely on reading the latest books at all. In part I feel like I might enjoy reading more, but I might also find reading less stressful.

This month was one of the toughest months to pick, but I honestly think that a YA read was my favourite. Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett is a contemporary YA romance novel set in California.

It tells the tale of Bailey and 'Alex' who have been chatting online for months anonymously in a film forum. The only problem is that they use alter egos and have never met. So when Bailey moved across to the west coast, she plans to hunt him down before meeting him to make sure he isn't an axe murderer and is really her true love. But when the irritating local surfer keeps distracting her, she must decide between following her original plan, or following a new one.

I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but I loved that this one had a bit of a twist to it and played on the fact that you don't know who you are talking to online. Think a twist on You've Got Mail and you are there! Whilst I didn't feel like I related to any of the characters, I really enjoyed how it all played out and couldn't put it down really.

Whilst I had worked out the twist really early on, I loved reading how it happened and didn't mind that my brain solved it. I can honestly say it was such a lovely summer read that really put a smile on my face.

With autumn coming in, I'm hoping to read some more spooky and thriller type books with maybe some fantasy thrown in too!
